Minnesota Birds
Birds of Minnesota, and especially in my own back yard in Minneapolis. In photographing birds, I go after the details; I want to be looking the bird in the eye. And that means getting close, even if it involves a bit of trickery.
I enjoy watching birds in a hard Minnesota winter, and learning about amazing skills and knowledge they need in order to survive here year round.
Prints of all my photos are available here.

Northern yellow shafted Flicker in winter
The Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) is a woodpecker, found in North and Central America. Ten subspecies are recognized and here in Minnesota we see this one, the "northern yellow-shafted". The black cheek markings identify a male. It's December and he probably should have moved south by now, but some stay through the winter.
