Minnesota Birds
Birds of Minnesota, and especially in my own back yard in Minneapolis. In photographing birds, I go after the details; I want to be looking the bird in the eye. And that means getting close, even if it involves a bit of trickery.
I enjoy watching birds in a hard Minnesota winter, and learning about amazing skills and knowledge they need in order to survive here year round.
Prints of all my photos are available here.

The pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) is found in Eastern North America, Canada and parts of the Pacific Northwest. With a wingspan of up to 30 inches, this striking bird is the largest woodpecker on the continent (unless you're convinced the Ivory Billed is still around, waiting to be found). When this photo was taken it was 10 below zero (F) here in Minnesota, right at down - just another day for this tough bird who spends the winter in cold northern forests.
