Minnesota Birds
Birds of Minnesota, and especially in my own back yard in Minneapolis. In photographing birds, I go after the details; I want to be looking the bird in the eye. And that means getting close, even if it involves a bit of trickery.
I enjoy watching birds in a hard Minnesota winter, and learning about amazing skills and knowledge they need in order to survive here year round.
Prints of all my photos are available here.

A Great Blue Heron Rookery in Minnesota
In March, large numbers of Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias) gather in rookeries to raise their young. This one is on a tiny island in the Mississippi, just north of downtown Minneapolis. There are dozens of birds, competing for space while gathering nesting materials and building nests.
