A concert at Jay Pritzer Pavilion in Chicago's Millenium Park, part of the 2018 Chicago Jazz Festival. The Pritzker Pavilion is a great outdoor music venue with good sound and sightlines; it can accomodate audiences in the thousands. Its spectacular architecture is the work of Frank Gehry and it opened in 2004.. The skyscraper in the background is the Aon Center.

Grant Condos in Chicago

Real estate is booming in Chicago, with many architecturally impressive new buildings completed in recent years. The Grant condominiums, on the south edge of Millenium Park, offers spectacular views of the city and of Lake Michigan. This development is by no means "affordable" to the masses, but its strking lines and colors definitely contribute to the skyline.

Buckingham Fountain in Chicago

Chicago's Buckingham Fountain, which began operation in 1927, is one of the largest in the world. As part of Grant Park it's on the National Register of Historic Places. Navy Pier in Chicago

Navy Pier and the Chicago skyline, seen from the top of the Ferris wheel. Navy Pier is a retail and recreational complex on mile-long peninsula jutting into Lake Michigan. It's been part of Chicago life and history for over 100 years; its current form dates from 1995.

Willis Tower (Sears Tower) and some of its Chicago neighbors

Willis Tower, still best known by its original name the Sears Tower, was, at 1450 feet, the tallest building in the world for 25 years after its completion in 1973. I got this somewhat dizzying photo of the tower and some of its neighbors from the upper deck of a tour bus as we passed beneath it on Wacker Drive.
