Drowned Trees, Crazy Sky

Dead trees and an interesting sky, on a windy November day in Minnesota. These trees were adjacent to a wetland; the water level rose one year and drowned them. The crazy sky is due to a cold front coming through.

It's October and leaves are landing on the old dock, in the shadows of the cattails..

Cold December Creek

On the last leg of its journey, between Minnehaha Falls and the Mississpi, Minnehaha Creek cuts through hills. In December the sun is low and the cold blue shadows are long. Although there hasn't been much snow yet, ice is starting to tighten its grip.

Hillside Overlooking the Mississippi

It's the middle of October. On a hillside overlooking the Mississippi just south of Saint Paul, Minnesota, sunlight reaches the tops of the trees and ignites the fall colors.

Cattails

After a wet summer, the cattails are tall in Minnesota wetlands. Cattails (Typha), also known as bulrushes, are considered a pest by some; they're invasive and can choke a wetland. But they provide wonderful habitat for birds and small mammals. If harvested at the end of summer, they improve water quality by removing excess nutrients and pollution from runoff. I like them.
